MATRYOSHKA DOLLS
Joyce Cox. Looking for something special for someone you love--or yourself?  Come make a one of a kind piece!  Called by many names, matryoshka dolls, babushka dolls, or nesting dolls are often designed to follow a particular theme.  The designs, which are sometimes quite elaborate, can feature a wide variety of themes--now is your chance to create your own!  Participants will design and paint their own matryoshka dolls.  Bring your ideas as the possibilities are endless.  The first night of class will begin with a brief overview of the materials and a chance to formulate your ideas/plan.  The second night, participants will paint their matryoshka dolls.  Participants can finish up any painting and/or shellac the final night.  An additional Thursday may be scheduled after Spring Break to allow additional time (if needed) for participants to finish their dolls.  Thursdays, Beginning February 21, Ending March 7 (an additional class may be scheduled March 21 if participants require additional time.) / 3 Nights / 6pm-9pm / Teens and Adults / 6 Minimum and 14 Maximum / Soldotna Middle School, Art Room / $75 (includes materials)

 

FUR SKINSEWING
Loraine Larsen, Skinsewer. Will demonstrate hide stretching and teach all the skinsewing techniques and secrets for making trapper and trooper-style fur hats; women’s dress band hats; sheepskin slippers with beaver cuffs; baby booties and baby hats; children’s beaver mittens and sheepskin trapper-style hats; earmuffs; fur mittens. SPINNING YARN USING A WHEEL
Lee Coray-Ludden.  Get to know the basics of using a spinning wheel, without buying a wheel!  Instructor will provide wheels for use during class, allowing participants to experience and learn this exciting craft.  Participants who already own their own wheel are welcome to bring it to class.  Lessons will be provided in each class, with homework to allow more practice time outside class.  Learn how a spinning wheel works, as well as basic maintenance.  Learn to spin single ply yarn and basic 2 ply.  Instructor will provide a variety of fibers, including different types of wool, silk, cashmere and alpaca for participants to try spinning.  Learn how to spin from raw fleece—including how to skirt the fleece, pick it, card it and practice spinning in the grease (with the lanolin still in the fleece).  Everyone will leave with a small sample of a variety of fibers.  Wednesdays, Beginning February 6, Ending February 27 / 6pm-9pm / 4 Nights / Teens and Adults / 3 Minimum and 6 Maximum / Soldotna Middle School, Classroom / $125 (includes materials and use of equipment for the duration of the class)

BUILDING IN THE CITY—A  ‘How to’ Guide

HOME LANDSCAPE DESIGN WORKSHOP
Nancy J. Casey, Professional Landscape Architect, Casey Planning & Design. This class provides instruction and information to assist homeowners in designing their home landscape. Discussions will include basic space planning and landscape design concepts such as 1) site analysis, 2) site programming, 3) the use of landform, structures, texture and color in design, and 4) common landscape problems.  Instructor will provide information on plant materials and construction materials, opportunities for one-on-one instruction, and hands-on design experience. FLY CASTING / FLY FISHING STREAM STRATEGIES FOR BEGINNERS

INTRODUCTION TO GEOCACHING
Scott Aleckson.  Learn the basics of the exciting outdoor hide and seek game of Geocaching.  Everything you need to know to get started.  We'll cover equipment and GPS selection, accessing geocache listings on the internet, loading them to your GPS, and going out to find them.  You'll learn about the different types of geocaches and the spin-off games.  Trackable items like Travel Bugs and Geocoins will be discussed as well as how to hide and publish your own geocaches.  This is going to be a fast-paced evening with presentations delivered by experienced local geocacher and member of the state-wide GeocacheAlaska! organization.  If you have a GPS, bring it along.  For those who are interested, following the class we will go out and find a real geocache in the area.  Saturday, March 23 / 2pm-5pm / 1 Day / Teens and Adults / Soldotna Middle School, Library / No Fee

 

BEGINNING PHOTOGRAPHY
Elaine Howell.  Got a camera but not sure just how to use it? CHILDREN’S MARTIAL ARTS—Kyu Shin Ryu
Sensei Mike Salzetti. This class will instruct children ages 6-11 in this traditional Japanese based martial art.  Students will learn punching, kicking and blocking techniques as well as learning to perform kata (choreographed martial combinations).  The class will help to develop physical strength, flexibility, and mental awareness.  The class also teaches the history and philosophy of Japanese martial arts as well as a basic understanding of the Japanese vocabulary associated with the martial arts.  In this class we train hard, we learn respect and most of all we have fun.

COMMON GRIEF REACTIONS

Safe Kids Kenai Peninsula Coalition and Central Emergency Services. INTERNET SECURITY / COMPUTER PROTECTION
Andrew Walker. There are many ways to protect your computer from hackers, viruses, tracking cookies, spy ware, scare ware, trojan horses and worms. In this class, we will discuss what all these things are as well as what you can do to protect yourself from these and other security threats.  What are the best anti-virus/spy ware protection programs and which ones should you avoid? What types of Internet activities are considered a high computer security risk? What should be avoided entirely on the Internet? The answer to these and many more questions will be revealed.  Updates are a crucial part of computer security and even stability, we will discuss what things are important to keep updated.  There will also be discussion on basic home and office network security such as firewalls, spam filtering and routers. COMPUTER MAINTENANCE, HARDWARE, CLEANING AND UPDATING
Andrew Walker.  The goal of this class is to help educate participants on proper computer maintenance, both preventative and routine.  We will talk about laptops vs. desktops vs. tablets, what makes them different, and what is the best choice for your needs.  There are places you shouldn't use your laptop at all, do you know where these places are?  Do you know how to properly clean a laptop or desktop?  You will after this class.  Updates are a crucial part of computer security and even stability, we will discuss what things are most important to keep updated.  We will also chat about the advantages and disadvantages of PC’s vs. Mac.  I will spend some time talking about the changing computer hardware industry from the past and leading into the future.  When was the last time you backed up your computer?  I will recommend backup methods and explain their differences.  My classes are designed to be informative to all levels of computer users from novice to advanced so come in, learn something, and support community schools.  Tuesday, February 19 / 1 Night / 6pm-8pm / Adults / 5 Minimum / Soldotna Middle School, Computer Lab / $25

INTRO TO PERSONAL COMPUTERS
Jordan Chilson.  So, you know how to turn on your computer...now what?  This four part series is designed for those who have little to no experience with modern PC’s and want to familiarize themselves with using them to accomplish everyday tasks.  The series will include the following:

Part 1--Introduction to Windows (1 night)--We will go over Windows and its components: the Desktop, Taskbar, Start Menu, Icons, etc.  Participants will become more comfortable navigating Windows and more familiar with some of its common features.

Part 2--Basic Computer Skills (1 Night)--Learn the basics of well-known Microsoft programs (i.e. Photo Gallery, Word and Paint.)  Participants will learn features that are shared by these programs, as well as features that are unique to each program.  From basic formatting to cutting and pasting, the features presented in this class are used continually!

Part 3--Introduction to the Internet (2 Nights)--There are many ways to get information via the Internet and almost as many ways to send and receive e-mail.  This section will cover the most common of each and show participants how to use the tools available more efficiently.  Learn how to perform basic web searches, how to use “My Favorites” and how to use different e-mail programs. 

Part 4--What Do You Want to Know? LEARN TO BUILD YOUR OWN COMPUTER
Jordan Chilson.  This four part series will teach you the skills required to assemble and maintain your own computer.  From a fundamental understanding of computer components to installing Windows, we’ll be covering it.  NOTE:  Participants are requested to bring their own parts (assistance  will be provided for what/where to buy when you register.)  A limited number of kits may be available to use during the class for free for those who want to learn to don’t need to build a new PC for themselves.  The series will include the following:

Part 1--Introduction to Hardware (1 night)--We will go over the basic components that make up a modern PC, what function they serve and how they work.  Participants will also learn how to shop for and pick compatible components in a cost effective manner.

Part 2--PC Assembly (1 Night)--They are like LEGOS for grownups!  Learn how all the pieces fit together to assemble your PC and the steps required to make it happen; we’ll actually be building it!

Part 3--Installation of Windows (1 Night, double length)--You’ve just built your first PC, but it’s useless until you install the Operating System.  We’ll be covering the process of installing and configuring Windows on your new PC so that you can actually begin using it.  This class will last from 6pm-8:30pm. 

Part 4--Basic PC Maintenance (1 Night)--Now that you’ve built your first computer, we’ll be covering basic maintenance/troubleshooting skills to keep your PC running in tip top shape.  Topics covered will include virus removal, hardware diagnosis and system optimization.  Tuesdays AND Thursdays, Beginning April 9, Ending April 18 / 4 Nights / 6pm-7:15pm (6pm-8:30pm on April 16) / Teens and Adults / 5 Minimum / Soldotna High School, Computer Lab / $85 ($50 for current full time students) REGISTRATION IN ADVANCE IS REQUIRED!
