The American Disabilities act is a law enacted through the United States Department of Justice. The latest version is the 2010 edition. You may download the full text at: http://www.ada.gov/2010ADAstandards_index.htm
The building Codes try to keep abreast of the requirements by paralleling their requirements with this act. This allows building inspectors to help owners build structures that are in compliance with the laws standards. As such the City of Soldotna enforces the building code provisions only and leaves the full enforcement of the ADA at the courts level as it was intended.
Owners of facilities are required to comply with the law for new construction. Existing construction is to comply by retrofits as they may apply to a particular facility. In some instances there are some exceptions and the most notable may be the “historic structure” section. We encourage all owners to become familiar with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
